Hetherington’s treatment of single women and single men beautifully illustrates the paradox that so stumped me when I first started studying singles. In the scientific literature differences between single men and single women—when there were any—more often favored the single women. The women seemed to take to singlehood with greater gusto than did the men, especially as they strode into their middle and later adult years. Yet the men seemed to be cut more slack. Here, in For Better or for Worse, is a great example of just how that happens. Hetherington found, as have others, that single women do better than single men. She admits that. Yet the stories she tells are of the fat and surly Betty Ann versus the suave and successful James and Simon. And adding the crowning ironic jewel, Hetherington does so under the guise of dispelling what she calls the biggest myth about divorce, that men are the winners.
